Kvinna till Kvinna has supported women’s rights in Liberia since 2010 and opened its country office in 2011. Liberia’s women’s movement played a key role in ending the country’s civil wars and advancing peace. But decades later, women and girls continue to face major barriers to equality.

Gender-based violence—including domestic abuse, sexual violence, and female genital mutilation—remains widespread, while limited access to education and economic opportunities keeps many women and girls in poverty.

Why we work in Liberia

Kvinna till Kvinna’s work in Liberia focuses on promoting sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and women’s economic empowerment (WEE) as foundations for women’s agency and dignity.

  • Gender-based violence, including female genital mutilation (FGM)
  • Economic inequality and limited access to opportunities
  • Low representation in politics and decision-making
  • Patriarchal norms restricting women’s rights

How we support women in Liberia

Together with our partner organisations in Liberia, we:

  • Promote women’s leadership and participation in politics and peacebuilding.
  • Advance sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for women and girls.
  • Strengthen women’s economic empowerment and challenge restrictive gender norms.
  • Support survivors of gender-based violence to access justice and protection.
  • Work with schools and communities to prevent early marriage and sexual violence.
  • Collaborate with government and civil society to ensure women’s rights are upheld.
  • Collaborate with partners, Human Right Defenders to conduct research to understand Gender Backlashes in Liberia and Sierra Leone collaborating with academia.
